A camera on a flexible rod goes down the line and puts the inside of your drain on a screen. You see the root mass, the cracked joint, the sag holding water, or the collapse, and exactly how far along the pipe it is.

A CCTV drain inspection is a waterproof camera pushed through your drain on a flexible rod, showing the inside of the pipe on a screen in real time. It is used to find the cause of repeat blockages, locate a fault before digging, check the condition of drains before buying a house, and confirm whether a pipe can be relined. It is the difference between a plumber telling you the pipe is broken and you seeing that it is.
You do not need a camera down every blocked drain. These are the times it pays for itself.
If your drain is blocked right now, the clearing comes first and the camera goes down straight after, while we are already there and the line is clean enough to see.
A camera cannot see through standing water and sludge. If the drain is blocked, we clear it first, usually with a drain machine or jet, then send the camera down a clean pipe.
Through the inspection opening or gully, not through your bathroom. The head is a few centimetres across with its own light, on a rod stiff enough to push and flexible enough to take the bends.
This is the point of it. You see the same screen we do, and we tell you what you are looking at, because raw drain footage is not obvious if you have not seen it before.
The rod is marked so we know how far in the problem is, and we can trace the position and depth from the surface. That is what turns a trench into a targeted hole.
Some faults need fixing now. Some need watching. Some just need a jet clean every couple of years, which is cheaper than the alternative. We tell you which, and why.
A camera inspection on its own is one of the smaller plumbing jobs, and it is usually cheaper than being wrong about where to dig. What changes it:
If we are already on site clearing a blockage, putting the camera down afterwards costs much less than booking it as a separate visit. It is worth doing while we are there.
The expensive decisions in drainage all happen underground where nobody can see. Where to dig. Whether to reline or replace. Whether this blockage is a one-off or the third symptom of a pipe that is failing. A camera turns all three from a judgement call into something you can look at.
An exploratory trench is the old way of finding a fault, and it is destructive and slow. Locating a fault on camera means we know it is, say, nine metres from the opening and under the edge of the driveway rather than under the middle of it. That is a small hole instead of a large one, and on paved or landscaped areas the reinstatement is often the biggest part of the bill.
It also stops you spending money on the wrong fix. Repeat clearing on a pipe with a root-filled crack is money into a hole in the ground. Equally, a pipe that looks alarming on paper can turn out to be sound with a bit of scale, in which case a jet clean is the whole answer and nobody needs to dig anything.
We get asked for these most often on the older housing stock: the Federation and interwar homes through Wahroonga, Turramurra, Killara and Gordon, the mid-century brick homes around Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills, and the original beach cottages at Freshwater, Curl Curl and Narrabeen. In all of those, original earthenware drains and mature trees are a common combination. A conveyancer will check the title. A building inspector will check the structure. Nobody checks the drains unless you ask.
Relining is a genuinely good solution and we do a lot of it. It also cannot be quoted honestly without a camera, because the price depends on the length of pipe, its diameter, the number of junctions and bends, and how much of the original pipe is still there to form against. If you have a relining quote and nobody has put a camera down your drain, that number is an estimate dressed up as a quote.
