Turn the gas off at the meter, open the doors and windows, do not touch any switch or anything electrical, get everyone outside, and call us from outside the building. Gas is the one part of plumbing where doing nothing is not the safe option.
Three quick steps. Every enquiry answered within 12 hours. If it's urgent, call.

If you can smell gas: turn the gas off at the meter by turning the valve a quarter turn so the handle sits across the pipe, open doors and windows, do not operate any electrical switch or appliance, do not use a phone inside the building, get everyone outside, and then call a licensed gasfitter from outside. Gasfitting in New South Wales is licensed work and must be carried out by a licensed gasfitter, who is required to give you a certificate of compliance for the work. B&M Advanced Plumbing does gas leak repair, appliance connections, cooktops, gas hot water and new gas lines across The Hills, the North Shore and the Northern Beaches, 24 hours a day.
Some of these are urgent and some are not. The first two are urgent.
For a gas smell now: gas off at the meter, windows open, everyone outside, no switches, then call Luke on 0423 213 079 or Zach on 0402 273 744 from outside. If anyone is unwell, ring 000 first.
No light switches, no power points, no appliances, no phone inside the building, no doorbell. A switch makes a small spark when it operates, and that is the thing you are avoiding.
Find the gas meter, usually on an external wall or in a meter box. There is a valve on the pipe. Turn it a quarter turn so the handle sits across the pipe rather than along it. That isolates gas to the property.
Ventilation disperses the gas. Open as you go, do not stay inside doing a thorough job of it.
Including pets. Do not go back in to collect things, and do not stand in an attached garage.
Us for the repair. If anyone is feeling unwell, or the smell is strong and you cannot isolate it, ring 000 first, and Jemena operates a 24 hour gas emergency line for network faults.
Once gas has been isolated because of a suspected leak, it needs a licensed gasfitter to find the fault, repair it, test the line and recommission the appliances. Turning it back on to see if the smell has gone is exactly the wrong move.
Gas jobs range from connecting a new cooktop to running a new line across a property. The variables:
Every gas job we do comes with a certificate of compliance. That is not an upsell, it is a legal requirement for gasfitting work in New South Wales, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does gas work and does not give you one.
We are relaxed about a homeowner having a go at a tap washer. We are not relaxed about gas, and no reputable plumber is.
In New South Wales, gasfitting is a separate licence class from plumbing and drainage, and gas work must be done by someone who holds it. At the end of the job you are entitled to a certificate of compliance. That document is your evidence that the work was done to standard, and it matters later: for your insurer if something goes wrong, for a purchaser when you sell, and for the next tradesperson who has to work on the system and needs to know it was done properly.
If someone offers to connect your new cooktop cash-in-hand without certification, the thing you are actually buying is a liability in your kitchen.
A gas leak is the one people know about. Gas escapes, it accumulates, and it needs an ignition source. That is why the instruction is always to avoid switches and electrical items, because the spark inside a light switch is exactly the ignition source you are trying to avoid.
Carbon monoxide is the quieter one. It is produced by incomplete combustion, and unlike natural gas it has no smell and no added odorant, so the only warning is how people in the house feel. Headaches, nausea and drowsiness that lift when someone goes outside, particularly around an older gas heater, is a pattern worth taking seriously rather than explaining away. If that is happening at your place, turn the appliance off and have it checked.
Gas leak location and repair. New and replacement appliance connections, including cooktops, ovens and heaters. Gas hot water, which sits across both our licences. New gas lines and points, including outdoor connections for barbecues and outdoor kitchens. Compliance certification on all of it.
Go and find your gas meter. Look at the valve. Work out which way it turns and whether you can actually reach and operate it. If it needs a spanner, put one somewhere you will find it in the dark. That is the whole task, and it is the difference between managing a gas smell and standing in your hallway wondering what to do.
